Each year, Congress recesses for the month of August. During Congress’ early years, the Capitol didn’t have air conditioning, which caused Members to leave during the summer months to escape the heat in Washington. Through many years of varying lengths of summer recess, in 1970, Congress mandated this as part of the Legislative Reorganization Act. Today, August recess continues to be a regular feature of the Congressional schedule because it’s critical for Members spend time in their districts and engage with their constituents.
The government should work for the people, not against their freedoms. Under Democrat control of the executive and legislative branch of the United States government, we have seen a lack of accountability to the American people resulting in a loss of faith in our institutions. In addition, since Biden took office, we have seen multiple attempts to infringe on our constitutional rights. It is critical that we re-establish responsibility within our government systems and restore confidence in the foundation of our great nation.
Americans shouldn’t have to choose between driving to work and putting food on the table. In a Democrat-controlled nation, sadly this is the reality. Inflation has increased nearly 550% since President Biden took office, which is a direct consequence of his reckless spending. Additionally, this Administration halted domestic energy production, which has had negative impacts on nearly every aspect of our economy, including sky-high costs, supply chain shortages, and small businesses.
Americans deserve a nation that’s safe. Under one-party Democrat control of our government, we have faced unprecedented crises that have threatened the safety and security of our country. Deadly drugs are flowing over the southern border, crime is running rampant throughout the nation, and our President has shown weakness on the world stage. Luckily, Republicans have solutions. We are committed to protecting the American people and have tangible plans to restore order in our great nation.
It’s clear that the excessive spending pushed through this Congress by Speaker Pelosi and Democrats has been a key driver of the over 40-year high inflation and dire economic situation facing Americans. Instead of addressing this crushing crisis, last week House Democrats passed a bloated Fiscal Year 2023 appropriations package, which prioritizes far-left initiatives, significantly increases federal spending, and will further fuel inflation.
Through countless “Help Wanted” signs, slower service in restaurants, overwhelmed small businesses, and canceled flights becoming a norm, it’s clear that our country is facing a severe worker shortage. Despite these obvious issues, President Biden continues his false narrative, claiming that the U.S. is in good economic shape – but Americans know better.
I hope my fellow Oklahomans enjoyed Independence Day weekend celebrating with families and friends. It was my honor to participate in observations across the Fifth District of Oklahoma throughout the holiday weekend, honoring our veterans, service members and fellow citizens during this special celebration of our many freedoms. It is also important to take time to remember the true meaning of this important holiday for our nation.
Monday, the Supreme Court rightfully sided with a high school football coach, known as Coach Kennedy, in a First Amendment case about post-game prayers at the 50-yard-line. This decision is an incredible win for First Amendment rights and religious liberties, both of which are foundational to our great nation.
Last week, I had the opportunity to visit McAllen, Texas with the Select Committee on the Economy. While the Democrats on this committee planned the trip to have a field hearing on infrastructure and climate issues along the border, I took the opportunity to again witness firsthand the disastrous effects of President Biden’s open border policies. While infrastructure is important, we cannot simply ignore the impacts the immigration crisis has on our southern border communities.
As a member of the House Armed Services Committee and a strong supporter of our brave troops and veterans, it is an honor to work on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) every year. The NDAA is the single most important piece of legislation that comes out of the Armed Services Committee each year. This legislation traditionally has strong bipartisan support and seeks to advance American military might whether on land, air, sea, or space.
