The True Meaning of Memorial Day
Today, on Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Across Oklahoma and the United States, flags are flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, wreaths are laid, and loved ones gather to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. It is a solemn reminder of the millions of Americans who tragically lost their lives defending our freedoms.
Memorial Day is not only a time of remembrance, but also a moment to reflect on the tremendous cost of our liberties. Across every generation, American servicemembers stepped forward with selflessness and unwavering dedication, putting their country before themselves. They stood against tyranny, terrorism, and oppression to preserve the American way of life. Their service carried them onto battlefields around the world and through moments of unimaginable hardship.
As we reflect on those we have lost, we must also recognize the loved ones left behind. Gold Star families carry grief that words can never fully heal. Their strength and resilience continue to inspire communities across our nation, and we remain deeply grateful for all they have endured.
This past week, the House passed several meaningful measures supporting veterans and military families. The Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act prevents veterans from being reported to the FBI’s NICS database solely because they need help managing their VA benefits, preserving the same constitutional due process rights every American is guaranteed. We also passed the Sharri Briley and Eric Edmundson Veterans Benefits Expansion Act, which strengthens support for more than half a million surviving military spouses and increases Special Monthly Compensation for thousands of our most severely disabled veterans.
Additionally, a few weeks ago, the House passed the Fiscal Year 2027 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. This legislation fully funds veteran’s healthcare and benefits, invests in VA medical facilities, expands mental health and suicide prevention programs, and strengthens Community Care services for those who have served. Republicans will continue working to ensure our heroes and their loved ones receive the care, respect, and gratitude they deserve. I was proud to vote in favor of each of these important bills.
This day is about far more than a long weekend, time spent with family and friends, or a cookout. I encourage all Oklahomans to take time to reflect and remember by attending a local ceremony, visiting a veteran’s cemetery, flying the American flag, or simply pausing for a quiet moment of prayer and gratitude. Teach the next generation the true meaning of this day and the price paid by so many to preserve our nation. May God bless our fallen heroes, their families, and the United States of America.
