The Senseless Defund the Police Movement

Only heroes are brave enough to pursue a career where they risk their lives every day for a stranger. So far this year, 155 police officers have died in the line of duty, protecting our fellow Americans. Yet, instead of working to support these brave men and women who fight to keep us safe, Democrats are continuing to push the defund the police movement and our country is witnessing the tragic effects.

Over the last year, policies like defunding the police, eliminating cash bail, and abolishing prisons, have not only demoralized our heroes, but have made our cities increasingly unsafe and deflected from the real issue of violent crime. Now, lawlessness is surging across America and is posing a major threat to the security of our communities. In the first three months of this year, major US cities saw murders increase by 18%— and this deadly trend has only continued.

United States citizens are deservedly worried about their safety and wellbeing. According to the Washington Post-ABC poll, 59% of Americans are concerned about rising crime, which is the highest percentage in four years. Criminality was even ranked prior to the pandemic as the top issue for all voters. As we can see from these numbers, defunding the police has clearly led to lawlessness, and has posed a physical threat to our country, as well as instilled fear and uncertainty into the American people.

One of the essential functions of government is to provide security to all citizens, and Democrats are failing to do so. Representatives like Cori Bush are promoting a double standard – they want to defund the police across the nation, while hiring private security for their own safety. Defunding the police should never be an option — especially in the midst of a crisis, yet Democrat elected officials continue to call for “no more police,” and applaud mayors for defunding their law enforcement departments.

We are undergoing one of the worst crime waves in modern history. Now more than ever we must provide law enforcement with the tools they need to ensure peace and safety in our communities. I am forever grateful of the brave men and women who are committed to keeping us safe; therefore, I stand with law enforcement and will continue to defend them as they do us.
