Reclaiming Government Accountability
The government should work for the people, not against their freedoms. Under Democrat control of the executive and legislative branch of the United States government, we have seen a lack of accountability to the American people resulting in a loss of faith in our institutions. In addition, since Biden took office, we have seen multiple attempts to infringe on our constitutional rights. It is critical that we re-establish responsibility within our government systems and restore confidence in the foundation of our great nation.
First and foremost, we must address the lack of accountability for the Biden Administration’s mishandling of the Afghanistan withdrawal. This is especially true as we remember a year ago this week when Kabul fell to the Taliban. The president blatantly ignored advice and warnings from not only Congress but his top military advisor and commanders on the ground. His actions led to a disastrous and devastating withdrawal that culminated in the deaths of 13 brave servicemembers and many left behind. The result was heartbreaking, predictable, and preventable. It left the Taliban in control of Afghanistan, which poses a significant national security risk. The Administration still has failed to take ownership of their botched withdrawal. Last year, I had the opportunity to question General Milley and Secretary Austin, and I remain committed to holding the Administration accountable for their actions.
On the domestic front, the president has sought to infringe on the constitutional rights of the American people. In April, the Administration established the “Disinformation Governance Board” within the Department of Homeland Security. This Orwellian board was clear government overreach seeking to crack down on the free speech rights of millions of Americans. I remain deeply concerned that executive agencies were seeking to utilize their power to halt speech with which they disagree.
The separate but equal branches of our government are the bedrock of our nation, and critical to effective democracy. The Founding Fathers sought to create coequal branches of government that could hold each other accountable. Sadly, through the power of the pen, the executive branch has increased its authority. We must return to principles of limited government and uphold the rights enshrined in our Constitution.
The American people deserve a government they can trust. My Republican colleagues and I are committed to reclaiming accountability, preserving and protecting our freedoms, and restoring faith in the foundations of our great nation.
