Honoring Sacrifice
On Memorial Day, a solemn day of remembrance, it’s crucial to reflect on the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who laid down their lives in service to our nation. Memorial Day is not just a day off or a time for barbecues; it's a time to pause and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice to safeguard our freedoms. These heroes, from every generation and background, answered the call of duty with courage and selflessness. They fought not for personal gain or glory, but for the ideals of liberty, democracy, and justice.
In the face of adversity, our servicemen and women demonstrated unwavering resolve and dedication. They stood tall against tyranny, oppression, and terrorism, often in far-flung corners of the globe. Their sacrifice reminds us that freedom is never free and must be defended with vigilance and valor.
In this Congress, my colleagues and I have supported numerous pieces of legislation to honor the sacrifice of those who have served. This Memorial Day we honor the sacrifice of Army Major Richard Star, who passed away in 2021 after a courageous battle with lung cancer linked to burn pit exposure during his deployments. The Act, named in his honor, aims to provide concurrent receipt of retirement pay and VA benefits to combat-disabled service members who were medically retired due to injuries sustained on duty.
I also signed on to a resolution from my colleague, Congressman Guest, which honors the men and women of the Armed Forces who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Furthermore, this resolution calls on the American people to observe Memorial Day in remembrance of our nation’s heroes and conveys that this recognition should be an expression of our respect, pride, and admiration for these courageous actions.
As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, let us take a moment to reflect on the price of freedom and to honor the brave men and women who paid it. One million men and women have selflessly given their lives in service to our nation. May we never forget their sacrifice.
