Grave Results of Endless Government Spending
Under Democratic control of the White House and Congress, our nation has broken records -- for the worse. Most recently, through irresponsible and unsustainable government spending, the U.S. national debt exceeded $30 trillion for the first time. Unfortunately, Democrats are kicking the can down the road and not addressing the biggest contributors to this crisis. Instead of reining in spending, they are continuing to rack up our nation’s debt that Americans will pay off for generations to come.
Although our world experienced an unprecedented health crisis and federal funding was necessary to get America back on track, the over-the-top and partisan $2 trillion American Rescue Plan last March did quite the opposite. This bloated bill was misguided, failing to combat the pandemic and instead stifling our economy.
The alarming national debt comes at a time when our economy is already struggling. Reckless government spending has contributed to sky-high prices on just about everything, with inflation hitting a 40-year high. On top of this, increased government handouts have incentivized millions of Americans to stay out of the workforce, contributing to the lowest labor participation rate in decades. Addressing the national debt and the state of our economy needs to be a priority.
Instead, it’s disheartening that Democrats are still pushing far-left, wasteful legislation like the $325 billion COMPETES Act. This bill, which House Democrats passed last week, would undo more than a year of bipartisan work that included provisions to strengthen American competitiveness, address the threat from the Chinese Communist Party, and secure our leadership in science and technology. The COMPETES Act even gives $8 billion in taxpayer funds to the UN’s green climate slush fund, to use as they see fit. Further, their Build Back Better Act, better known as the Build Back Broke Act, is another irresponsible and misplaced spending bill on which their own party can’t even agree. It is clear, their legislative priorities are not in line with the interests of the American people and hard-working Oklahoma families.
Overall, it is crucial that our nation’s leaders enact policies that lower our soaring debt and focus on the true needs of America. Republicans will continue to work with and urge our colleagues across the aisle to create meaningful, bipartisan legislation to save our economy right now, and for the future.
