Honoring Veterans Day
As Americans, we cherish the values of liberty, freedom, and patriotism. This week, I am reminded of a quote by Ronald Reagan, who once said, “Veterans know better than anyone else the price of freedom, for they’ve suffered the scars of war. We can offer them no better tribute than to protect what they have won for us.” This quote rings true—America is the home of the free because of the brave. Every year on November 11th, Americans take this opportunity to come together and honor those who have selflessly served our nation.
From the trenches of World War I to the battlefields of Afghanistan, Veterans Day serves as a testament to the American spirit of patriotism and gratitude we hold for those who protect our way of life. Originally established as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of the first World War, it was later renamed Veterans Day to honor all American veterans.
The Fifth Congressional District is home to many veterans, and it is an honor to represent them and ensure their voices are heard in Congress. So far this year, the House has passed the Fiscal Year 2024 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill. This legislation fully funds veterans’ health care programs, benefits, and other Department of Veterans Affairs programs. We also passed H.R. 1226, the Wounded Warrior Access Act, which would modernize the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and make it easier for veterans to access their claims file in an electronic format. I also worked with the VA on a rule change that updated their casket and urn reimbursement program, to ensure that all of our nation’s veterans without the necessary resources or next of kin are given the respect and honor they deserve as they are laid to rest. It has always been an utmost priority of mine to be a strong supporter of our servicemembers and veterans.
On Veterans Day, I hope everyone can take this time to pay homage to the dedication and unwavering commitment of those who have served. I am grateful for the men and women who have helped preserve our way of life. The freedoms we enjoy today are but a reflection of their heroic deeds, a reflection that captures their personal courage and the depth of their love for their country.
